Is Monday the Most Dangerous Day of the Week?
The biggest day for the filing of Workers’ Compensation claims is by far Monday. Each day, on average for a five day week, should have twenty percent of claims. But Monday, bloody Monday, is when over 27% of Workers’ Comp claims take place. Why?
Is it because workers aren’t in the groove yet and are prone to making more mistakes? Partly.
Is it because after a weekend of hard partying or watching Sunday Night Football while tossing back a few is throwing their co-ordination off? Well there’s Monday Night Football too but it’s a factor but not the whole story.
So why are such a high percentage of Workers’ Compensation claims submitted on Monday? The consensus is fraud.
Guy bangs himself in the thumb with a hammer over the weekend building a tree house for his kid. Can barely grip it the next morning. Goes into work as a roofer gives it a tap, screams, and there you go another work related injury.
Interestingly, the majority of injuries creating Monday claims are soft tissue injuries because they are difficult to spot or diagnose. These types of injuries, when illegitimate, and not all are, are filed by workers who are seeking increased medical attention in other areas or some time off from work. Perhaps the reason they file on Monday is they didn’t want to go back to work in the first place and are taking the first opportunity to get out.
Whatever the reason, holding a brief safety talk or getting the word out to your workers that they should be extra careful on Mondays and by increasing your vigilance and letting your workers know that, should decrease claims and ultimately lower your Workers’ Comp rates.
Are your Workers’ Compensation rates too high? Is your policy coming up for renewal? Would you like someone else to shop your rates and get the lowest cost policy for you?
