Can Owning a SmartPhone Lower your Workers’ Compensation Rates?

OSHA_Heat_AppThey have an app for that.

Well, not specifically for lowering your workers’ compensation insurance rates, but I’ll tell you why it’s not far off.

OSHA just released a free app that can monitor your outdoor workers and their supervisors informing them about the dangers of heat related problems right where they are working.

What this means is, much like holding safety classes and other methods of lowering your premium it is only a matter of time before insurers recognize the value of “app based” safety and drop rates accordingly.

The heat monitor app is free from OSHA and takes heat and humidity readings directly from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and, thanks to the built in global positioning satellite (GPS), can inform outdoor workers about the heat index in their location.  If the heat index is high enough workers receive pushed reminders to hydrate, get scheduled rest breaks, adjustments for their work operations, and other tools to prevent heat stroke and other heat related ailments.  Another nice feature is the ability for a user to connect right to OSHA via the App.

As far as workers’ compensation insurance goes, the safety training and built-in “First-Aid Tutor” is going to go a long way in helping providers recognize the value to them (and to you) in cutting down claims. The best part is, this is just the tip of the iceberg. We can expect all kinds of worker safety apps to appear in the future.
